Medical and Law Graduates Said to Be Wasting Their Time

Medical and law degrees are often regarded as prestigious. Additionally, they require spending a long time on university benches until entering the workforce. However, an AI expert holds a different view on these graduates. Jad Tarifi, the founder of Google’s first generative AI team, states that they are merely wasting their time. With the current developments in AI, the PhD graduate in AI says that the technology will catch up to the lag before students in those fields finally graduate. This renders their learning process futile. “AI itself will disappear by the time you complete your PhD degree. Even things like applying AI to robotics will be resolved by then,” Tarifi said, quoted from Fortune, Friday (17/4/2026). The length of time it takes to graduate from those fields will leave them with outdated knowledge upon entering the workforce. Tarifi also criticises the current mode of education adopted. The methods used still rely on memorisation, rather than accelerating innovation in the AI field. “Future success will not come from accumulating credentials, but from developing a unique perspective, emotional awareness, and strong interpersonal relationships,” Tarifi stated.
