Mediators continue talks on parameters for US-Iran peace agreement
Ankara — Mediators are continuing to discuss the parameters of a potential US-Iran peace agreement despite ongoing tensions over negotiations, according to a Turkish government source cited by RIA Novosti.
Earlier the same day, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated his administration had a strong chance of reaching a temporary nuclear deal with Iran.
Last week, The New York Times reported that a proposed deal to resolve the US-Iran conflict allegedly involves Iran surrendering its enriched uranium stockpiles, though details remain unclear.
“Mediation contacts are ongoing, with parameters for a potential US-Iran agreement currently under discussion, including guarantees, agreement steps, and monitoring mechanisms,” the source was quoted as saying.
He added that communication between the two sides has not been fully severed, and mediation efforts by several countries continue.
Ankara believes both the US and Iran have an interest in avoiding direct military confrontation and the severe regional and global economic repercussions that could result, the source said.
Turkey deems it crucial that any potential US-Iran agreement is not temporary but serves as a foundation for long-term regional stability and certainty, the source stated.
On 28 February, the US and Israel launched strikes on Iranian targets, killing over 3,000 people. On 8 April, Washington and Tehran announced a ceasefire and resumed talks in Islamabad, which concluded without concrete outcomes.
Despite no announcement of renewed hostilities, the US has imposed a blockade on Iranian ports.
