MediaTek Dimensity 8550 Chipset Launched, Supports On-Device Google Gemini Nano V3 AI
Semiconductor company MediaTek has launched its latest chipset, the Dimensity 8550, on Wednesday, 27 May 2026. The chipset falls into the mid-range category and is an updated version of the Dimensity 8500, which was released earlier this year. The primary upgrade in the Dimensity 8550 lies in the artificial intelligence (AI) sector. MediaTek has equipped this chipset with LLM Booster and support for Google’s latest AI model, Gemini Nano V3, designed to run directly on devices (on-device). With this support, smartphones powered by the Dimensity 8550 will be able to run various AI features without needing constant internet or cloud connectivity. In terms of specifications, the Dimensity 8550 retains many similarities with its predecessor. It is manufactured using TSMC’s 4nm N4P process and features an octa-core CPU based on Arm’s Cortex-A725 architecture. For graphics, MediaTek continues to use the Arm Mali-G720 MC8 GPU, which supports WQHD+ displays with a refresh rate of up to 144Hz. In photography, the Dimensity 8550 supports camera sensors up to 320 megapixels and 4K video recording at 60 frames per second. The chipset also supports H.264 and H.265 video encoding and playback of videos in H.264, H.265, VP9, and AV1 formats. The Dimensity 8550 supports LPDDR5X RAM with speeds up to 9,600 Mbps and UFS 4 + MCQ storage. For connectivity, the chipset supports 5G-Advanced (5G-Adv), 3GPP Release 16, dual SIM dual active (DSDA), and Sub-6GHz networks. MediaTek has also included features such as Smart Network Suite 3.0, Subway Mode 2.0, Wi-Fi 6E, and Bluetooth 5.4. The chipset also supports multiple satellite navigation systems, including GPS, BeiDou, Galileo, GLONASS, QZSS, and NavIC. In the coming months, the chipset is expected to feature in more mid-range smartphones.
