Media Report: China's Last-Minute Intervention Successfully Convinces Iran to Agree to Ceasefire
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, WASHINGTON – US President Donald Trump told AFP, as reported by the Telegraph, that he believes China played a role in the ceasefire negotiations with Iran. Meanwhile, the New York Times, citing three Iranian officials, also reported that Iran has finally agreed to a ceasefire mediated by Pakistan following China’s last-minute intervention.
China reportedly succeeded in urging Iran to “demonstrate flexibility and ease tensions” amid concerns over a potential global economic collapse. On Wednesday (8/4/2026), China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that they welcome the ceasefire, adding that Beijing has undertaken its own efforts to realise peace in the Middle East.
“China has consistently advocated for an immediate ceasefire and cessation of hostilities, as well as resolving disputes through political and diplomatic channels,” said China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Mao Ning, but did not elaborate on the details of China’s efforts in the negotiations between the US and Iran.
US President Donald Trump, in a post on Truth Social on Tuesday (7/4/2026) or Wednesday WIB, announced a two-week ceasefire period with Iran. Israel agreed with Trump’s decision.
“I agree to temporarily halt bombing and attacks on Iran for a two-week period, a ceasefire on both sides,” Trump said.
Trump claimed the ceasefire decision came after his discussions with Pakistan’s leader as moderator, after Iran agreed to open the Strait of Hormuz. Iran responded to Trump’s decision by declaring victory in the war.
Shortly after Trump’s announcement, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed that a temporary agreement has been reached.
“If attacks on Iran are halted, our Armed Forces will cease their defensive operations,” Araghchi said, quoted by Al Jazeera.
“For a two-week period, safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz will be possible with coordination with the Iranian Armed Forces and considering technical restrictions,” Araghchi added.
