Media: Iranian operations strain Pentagon budget amid cost crisis

The United States Department of Defense (Pentagon) is facing pressure to cover costs arising from military operations in Iran and several other unexpected deployments, Fox News reported, citing US military officials. A number of these operations were not included in the 2026 fiscal year budget planning, thereby increasing the Pentagon’s resource burden and forcing US military leaders to make difficult decisions regarding expenditure. These unplanned operations include Operation Epic Fury in Iran, southern border security missions, and National Guard deployments. This financial pressure is further exacerbated by rising fuel prices. US Navy Operations Chief, Admiral Daryl Caudle, told the US House Armed Services Committee in May that the Navy would need to reduce routine operational costs if additional funding is not secured. On 28 February, the United States and Israel began launching joint attacks against several targets in Iran, resulting in over 3,000 casualties. On 8 April, Washington and Tehran announced a two-week ceasefire. Following the end of the ceasefire, there have been no reports of widespread hostilities resuming; however, the United States has begun imposing a naval blockade on Iranian ports. Currently, Iran and the United States are engaged in negotiations to agree on a framework for a memorandum of understanding. Meanwhile, both parties continue to carry out sporadic attacks. The United States has stated that the use of military force is necessary to maintain the blockade and exercise its right to “self-defence.”
