Media and society
From Koran Tempo
The public follows two lifestyles, Western and traditional, with the situation worsening rather than being corrected by the mass media.
TV stations on the one hand present dramas with westernized and luxury themes, while on the other they also air programs that defy rational thought.
Various irrational or mystical shows, meant to replace outdated dramas, have significant impact on public behavior. The emergence of mystical teachings is a direct effect of non- educative performances.
Many people also try to attain instant success by irrational means, which is reason for concern, particularly when they choose to settle problems through magic.
The media should maintain its educative function while entertaining and influencing the masses. It should observe its social control role in addition to seeking commercial gain.
