Video footage shows a village head in Medan mocking a resident who complained about public street lighting to Medan Mayor Rico Waas has gone viral on social media. The village head was subsequently questioned by the Inspectorate.

As reported by detikSumut on Wednesday (29 July 2026), the circulating video shows a resident telling Medan Mayor Rico Waas about security concerns on Paya Pasir Road. The resident said he had spent his own money to buy and install street lamps.

“Sir, may I have permission to install lamps, Sir? It’s so dark here, Sir. There are so many muggings around here. I installed four lamp posts myself using my own money,” the resident said in the video.

The village head of Paya Pasir, named Syerly, then interjected, suggesting the resident was merely pouring out his feelings.

“Oh, look who’s sharing their troubles,” said Syerly, who was seen standing beside Rico Waas in the video.

The Medan City Inspectorate subsequently summoned Syerly and sought clarification over her remarks. This was documented in Clarification Report Number 800.1.6.2/257/Irbansus/2026 dated 28 July 2026.

“From the examination, the civil servant concerned is strongly indicated to have violated the code of ethics in accordance with Medan Mayoral Regulation Number 58 of 2023 concerning the Enforcement of Discipline and the Code of Ethics for Civil Servants,” said Medan City Inspector Erfin Fahrurrazi in a written statement.
