Medan man makes off with 150g gold bars in fake purchase scheme as CCTV video goes viral
A man’s gold bar theft at Toko Mas Agung on Brigjen Katamso Street in Medan Maimun District, Medan, was captured on CCTV and went viral on social media. The suspect fled with the gold bars after pretending to purchase them.
According to detiksumut on Tuesday (26 May 2026), a man wearing a helmet and mask arrived at the store to buy gold. CCTV footage showed him checking the authenticity of the gold bars by photographing them with his mobile phone.
Kanit Polsek Medan Kota, Iptu Poltak Tambunan, stated the incident occurred on Saturday (23 May). Initially, a man came to purchase gold bars by claiming he wanted to inspect them first. The store staff then handed over the gold in two separate stages.
‘We saw the staff give gold to an unknown buyer, even handing it over twice. I noticed the staff were not paying sufficient attention,’ he said.
The first staff member handed over a 50-gram gold bar for authenticity checks, followed by a 100-gram bar. Once in possession of both bars, the suspect fled immediately with the gold.
‘Twice. Estimated losses amount to Rp400 million. We have processed the crime scene and interviewed witnesses,’ he added.
