The panel of judges and the Chief Judge of the Medan District Court have granted the request for suspension of detention against Amsal Sitepu. Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives has expressed its appreciation.

The suspension was granted following an official request from Commission III of the DPR RI, acting as guarantor, submitted directly by Commission III member Hinca Panjaitan to the Chief Judge of Medan on Tuesday (31/3/2026). Commission III of the DPR views this decision as a step that reflects the judiciary’s commitment to upholding the principles of justice, objectivity, and respect for the presumption of innocence in the legal process.

Commission III Chairman Habiburokhman explained the reasons for Commission III of the DPR acting as guarantor for the suspension of detention against Amsal Sitepu. He stated that this is a form of institutional moral responsibility to ensure that the legal process runs fairly and proportionately.

“This decision deserves appreciation because it shows that the judicial institution is very responsive to the dynamics developing in society in ensuring that the legal process runs objectively and proportionately, without disregarding applicable legal principles,” said Habiburokhman.

With the approval of this suspension, Amsal Sitepu can be released from detention today and is still required to attend all stages of the ongoing trial at the Medan District Court.

Habiburokhman stated that detention does not mean stopping the legal process. Rather, it provides the defendant with an opportunity to undergo the trial in a fairer and more humane manner.

“The DPR RI also invites all parties to respect the ongoing legal process and not to speculate before there is a final decision from the panel of judges,” he said.

“Commission III of the DPR RI will continue to monitor the course of the trial to ensure the enforcement of the rule of law and to maintain public trust in Indonesia’s judicial institutions,” he added.
