The Medan City Government in North Sumatra has invited 400 orphans from across the region to shop for various needs in preparation for the Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijriah/2026 celebration at one of the city’s modern markets. Medan Mayor Rico Tri Putra Waas stated that the activity involves collaboration with the National Zakat Agency (Baznas) of Medan City and the Indonesian Civil Servants Corps (Korpri). “This programme is a form of the Medan City Government’s commitment to bringing happiness to all layers of society, especially orphaned and underprivileged children,” Rico Waas said in Medan on Wednesday. According to him, major religious celebrations should be experienced with joy by all societal layers, including orphans. “We want to ensure that no child in Medan City feels sad during Eid because they do not have new clothes. Every child deserves to feel happiness on the day of victory,” he said. Rico Waas also mentioned that the city government, along with relevant policymakers, is giving orphans the opportunity to shop with an allocation of Rp600,000 each. He noted that this amount is an increase compared to the Eid 2025 programme, which provided only Rp500,000 per child. “This addition is expected to give the children more flexibility to obtain more complete necessities, from clothes, trousers, hijabs, to shoes,” he said. As social beings, he added, everyone has a responsibility to help others, especially those in need. “This is not just about new clothes, but about our care. We want these children to feel that they are not alone, that many people care and want to share happiness with them,” he stated. Chairman of Baznas Medan City, Nursyam, explained that the Shopping Together Programme targets a total of 400 children from all districts in Medan City. “On the first day, the activity was attended by 200 children from the northern Medan area, namely Belawan, Medan Labuhan, Medan Deli, and Medan Marelan sub-districts. Meanwhile, on the second day, it will be attended by children from other sub-districts that have been recorded by Baznas Medan City,” Nursyam said.
