Meat stalls prone to disease

JAKARTA: Meat stalls in the traditional markets in Central Jakarta are not hygienic, making them prone to diseases, a survey revealed.

According to the survey, which was conducted by the City Husbandry and Fishery Agency and the research institution of the Bogor Institution of Agriculture (IPB) recently, many stalls of beef, water-buffalo, and chicken meat do not comply with the health requirements, Central Jakarta Deputy Major, Sabungan Pandjaitan, said at a ceremony to promote healthy meat stalls last week.

He also said that the meat on sale in the traditional markets were not of good quality due to poor control from the government.

"We suspect that illegal meat is sold at the traditional markets," he was quoted by the City's official website, BeritaJakarta.com. "People should be careful when buying meat. They should check it carefully before they buy it," he said.

He called on PD Pasar Jaya and Dharma Jaya, which manages the traditional markets in the city, to continue supervising the supply of meats to the markets.

He said that 10 percent of the total meat on sale in Central Jakarta's traditional markets was supplied illegally from illegal slaughter houses from outside Greater Jakarta.--JP
