Measles Cases Spread, Vaccination and Education Need Strengthening
Measles cases in Indonesia have increased over the past few months, drawing attention from various parties. Vaccination and public education must be strengthened to control the spread.
Data from the Ministry of Health records 59 extraordinary events spread across 39 districts and cities and 14 provinces, with a total of 2,740 cases since the beginning of 2026.
Member of DPR RI Commission IX Pulung Agustanto stated that the government and society need to heighten vigilance against the spread of measles.
The PDIP politician said that the long-running immunisation programme needs to be reinforced so that cases do not rise again. “Why is it spreading again now? This is a danger alarm that must be heeded,” said Pulung in his statement on Wednesday (1/4/2026).
Pulung explained that one factor that needs to be addressed is the availability of vaccines in the regions. He found that there are still areas experiencing limitations in the supply of measles vaccines.
“Therefore, I am asking the Ministry of Health to ensure that measles vaccines are available throughout the nooks and crannies.”
In addition, he assessed that public education also needs to be strengthened. There is still a portion of society that rejects vaccination due to being influenced by incorrect information. “The Ministry of Health must continue to conduct education in accordance with the culture and background of the community’s beliefs.”
Pulung emphasised that the success of the vaccination programme greatly depends on high immunisation coverage in society.
“If there are still community members who have negative views towards vaccines, they must be approached seriously. Do not let it be left alone. Because it will disrupt the success of this vaccination programme.”
