Measles cases in US surpass 2,300, exceeding 2025 record

Washington (ANTARA) - The number of measles cases in the United States has now surpassed 2,300, exceeding the record total for the whole of 2025.

This was revealed in the latest data released by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Friday.

Previously, on 5 June, the CDC confirmed that measles cases in the United States had exceeded 2,000 for two consecutive years, with 2,289 confirmed cases recorded throughout 2025.

“As of 23 July 2026, a total of 2,318 confirmed measles cases have been reported in the United States during 2026. Of that number, 2,302 cases were reported by 45 jurisdictions, while the remaining 16 cases were identified among foreign tourists visiting the United States,” the CDC said.

The CDC added that of the 2,318 total cases, 2,153 were linked to 35 outbreaks recorded across the United States so far.

Measles had in fact been declared eliminated from the United States in 2000 thanks to a mass vaccination programme.

However, the renewed global spread of measles has increased the risk of exposure for unvaccinated residents through transmission from abroad.
