Measles cases in US surpass 2,300, exceeding 2025 record

The number of measles cases in the United States has now surpassed 2,300, exceeding the record total for the whole of 2025. The latest data was released by the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Friday. Earlier, on 5 June, the CDC confirmed that measles cases in the United States had set a record of more than 2,000 cases for two consecutive years, with 2,289 confirmed cases recorded throughout 2025. “As of 23 July 2026, a total of 2,318 confirmed measles cases have been reported in the United States during 2026. Of these, 2,302 cases were reported by 45 jurisdictions, while 16 additional cases were found in international travellers visiting the United States,” the CDC stated. The CDC added that of the total 2,318 cases, 2,153 are linked to 35 outbreaks recorded across the US. Measles was declared eliminated from the United States in 2000 thanks to a mass vaccination programme. However, the increasing global spread of measles has heightened the risk of exposure for unvaccinated residents through imported cases.
