Meaning of coalition
Meaning of coalition
From Koran Tempo
The term "coalition" is becoming more popular as the
presidential runoff nears, with the two candidates canvassing
support through power-sharing political alliances, which is very
legitimate in politics.
Though the upcoming election is direct, there remains the
belief that these coalitions of the political elite will affect
the vote at the grassroots level. Such coalitions are also linked
with deals to build strong legislative backing to ensure smooth
policymaking.
In fact, Indonesia's political elite have no experience in
forming coalitions, let alone permanent alliances over a long
period. These present coalitions are only forms of public
advocacy and backing for certain candidates.
Now a new pattern has emerged, with four or five major
political parties combining and announcing their alliance before
the new president is elected. This is a good idea because none of
the parties can rule without mutual support.
Anyway, what ordinary people expect is that the political
elite involved in coalitions with the winning presidential
candidate will be committed to upholding democracy, human rights
and clean governance, instead of pursuing power and wealth.
