MBZ Toll Reopened After Temporary Closure, Traffic Now Flowing Smoothly
The Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed (MBZ) elevated toll road was temporarily closed for 1.5 hours due to high peak mudik traffic. The MBZ toll has now been reopened. “We closed MBZ for almost one and a half hours earlier. Since the contraflow measures have been completed, we have of course reopened it, and alhamdulillah, it is now smooth. It’s smooth now,” said the Head of the Indonesian National Police Traffic Corps (Kakorlantas) Inspector General Agus Suryonugroho at the command centre at KM 29 of the Jakarta-Cikampek Toll, North Cikarang, on Thursday (19/3/2026). Inspector General Agus explained that the closure of MBZ, in addition to anticipating traffic density, was because the toll is hot and has no rest area. Therefore, when MBZ was closed, drivers were directed through the Jakarta-Cikampek toll. “For that reason, there were three measures we had to take earlier. We temporarily closed MBZ. Because MBZ is hot and has no rest area, we diverted to the lower level,” he stated. Inspector General Agus mentioned several new strategies implemented by the police this year to anticipate congestion. The character of this year’s mudik also shows some differences. “However, to prepare for contraflow from 36 to 47. After it’s done, we will reopen it. This is different; last year there was none. 47 is still dense, we reopen from 47 to 48, two lanes. It still wasn’t enough to smooth the flow, so we reopen from 58 to 70. Up to 70, it connects to the national one-way,” he explained. The peak mudik traffic occurred on Wednesday (18/3). The police implemented several traffic engineering measures, such as contraflow up to the national one-way.
