The Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections (Kanwil Ditjenpas) is building a Nutritious Free Meals (MBG) kitchen at Waingapu Class IIA Prison. Regional Director Ketut Akbar Herry Achjar monitored the construction progress on Sunday, 24 May 2026.

Akbar stated that the inspection was conducted to directly assess the progress of the MBG kitchen construction, which is being developed as a facility to support the provision of healthy meals. He added that the programme has strategic value in enhancing inmate rehabilitation beyond improving correctional services quality.

“The presence of the MBG kitchen in the prison environment provides dual benefits: supporting healthy meal provision while also serving as a platform for empowering and building the independence of inmates,” Akbar said in a press release on Monday, 25 May 2026.

Under the programme, inmates will be involved in kitchen management and receive culinary skills training as preparation for reintegration into society.

“This approach is crucial as prison rehabilitation focuses not only on security but also on developing inmates’ capabilities, discipline, and social readiness to become productive members of society post-release,” he added.

Akbar stressed that correctional programmes must deliver tangible impacts, not only for inmates but also in support of national development agendas.

“The MBG programme in the correctional system is not merely about providing nutritious meals but also building skills, discipline, and new hope for inmates to reintegrate successfully into society,” Akbar said.
