Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds that struck Semarang, Central Java, on Wednesday 18 February 2026 caused severe damage to a Nutrition Programme Service Unit (SPPG) kitchen facility located on Jalan Kyai Gilang, Mangkang Kulon sub-district, Tugu district. The roof of the MBG kitchen was left in ruins after being swept by the powerful gusts.

The incident occurred whilst the building was being prepared to serve the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) programme, which was scheduled to begin operations the following week.

The event began at approximately 10.00 local time when extreme weather struck the Mangkang Kulon area. According to eyewitnesses near the site, the sound of howling wind was followed by a loud crash. Upon investigating the source of the noise, the front canopy and lightweight steel roofing of the SPPG facility had been completely destroyed.

Fauzan, a field officer at the Mangkang Kulon SPPG, explained that the damage was caused by the building’s position directly facing a vast expanse of rice paddies with no barriers such as trees to break the wind. This meant that strong winds from the west struck the front canopy structure of the building head-on.

“The wind was like a storm, blowing from west to east. There are no trees here, so what took the hit was this roof canopy. Nothing inside was damaged, and since we’re not yet operational, repairs should be completed within two to three days,” he said.

Nevertheless, he confirmed that the damage was limited to the exterior. Items inside the building, including computer equipment, electronics and kitchen appliances, were confirmed safe and undamaged despite some rainwater leakage.

The facility’s management estimated total material losses from the incident at between Rp 7 million and Rp 10 million.
