Mazda to set up own dealerships

The Jakarta Post, Jakarta

Mazda Motor Corporation of Japan will start direct selling of its cars in July through its wholly-owned Indonesian subsidiary, PT Mazda Motor Indonesia (MMI), although it has only set itself a modest initial sales target of 500 cars by the end of the year.

The company, which will open its first dealership in Jakarta on July 7, was established in March in an investment worth US$5 million after the Japan-based automobile manufacturer decided to take charge of its own distribution. Previously, local car assembler Indomobil Group handled Mazda's sales in Indonesia.

Mazda Southeast Asia managing director Will Angove said Tuesday that Mazda Motor Indonesia, which would focus on selling high-end cars valued at over Rp 200 million, would gradually increase its sales to between 1,500 and 2,000 cars next year, and to 5,000 cars in 2009.

Angove, who is a former president of PT Ford Motor Indonesia, said that despite sluggish demand for cars in the first semester, he was confident that the automotive market in Indonesia was set for growth.

This year's first quarter car sales dropped 44.8 percent to only 79,414 from 143,963 in the same period last year.

"For the long term, market growth in Indonesia will be good as interest rates have decreased moderately and fuel prices have stabilized," he said.

Angove said that Mazda Motor Indonesia would set up at least 15 outlets in Indonesia, including three key dealerships in Sumatra, three in Kalimantan, four to five in Java, two in Jakarta, one in Bali and one in Papua.

Angove added that currently Mazda was transforming its brand image from a manufacturer of low-priced cars to a producer of sophisticated high-end vehicles.

As part of this effort, Mazda Motor Indonesia would stage an exhibition of its vehicles on July 21. "We will exhibit our 1.6 liter mid-sized passenger car, the Mazda3, as well as the Tribute SUV, RX8 sports car and B-series pickups".

He said that by October, the Mazda6, a 2.3 liter mid-sized sports sedan, would be available on the local market, followed by the new model Tribute in January next year, and the BT-50 pickup in the first quarter of next year. (08)
