Mayor urged to combat gambling

SEMARANG, Central Java: Some 30 students of the Indonesian Muslim Student Association (KAMMI) staged a demonstration at the city office on Friday, demanding that Mayor Sukawi Sutarip combat the widespread gambling in the city on the eve of the Ramadhan fasting month.

"Pak mayor and the police, take the Ramadhan month as a good moment to show your commitment and credibility, please. You should set a good example to all residents and, therefore, all immoral deeds must be halted during the fasting month," Dedi Nurheidi, who coordinated the demonstration, said.

The student demonstrators also called on city authorities to close down all night spots and entertainment centers during the fasting month.

Human Mukti Azis, deputy chairman of the city legislative council, said he appreciated the students' demands and pledged to channel their aspirations through the legislature.

"We have the same aspirations and will fight for them," he said when receiving the demonstrators. --Antara
