Mayor says Bogor needs own arts

BOGOR, West Java (JP): The mayor of Bogor, Eddy Gunardi, has asked artisans, art teachers and other people interested in art to help create arts special to Bogor.

"Bogor does not yet have special arts which can be publicized to attract tourists," said Eddy's written address which was read by Dudun Basyirudin, the assistant for administrative affairs, at the opening of the IV Cultural Week of Bogor at City Hall yesterday.

Eddy said many areas in West Java have their own special arts. He said Subang has its Sisingaan, Kuningan has its Kuda Renggong and Banten has its Beduk Rampak. "Bogor has nothing to attract tourists," he said.

The cultural week to commemorate the 51st anniversary of Indonesia, on Aug. 17, will end on Aug. 18.

Sobur Anwar, the chairman of the organizing committee told The Jakarta Post that more than 800 students from 25 elementary schools, 20 junior high schools and 15 senior high schools were involved in the cultural week.

Sobur said "cultural week is also meant to unearth cultural sources". (21/sur)
