Medan (ANTARA) — The Mayor of Medan, Rico Tri Putra Waas, has stated that the free homecoming programme organised by the city government to welcome Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijriah brought joy to residents celebrating the festival in their hometowns.

“Returning to one’s hometown is an important moment for the community to celebrate Eid,” said Rico Waas after sending off participants in the free homecoming programme in Medan, North Sumatra, on Tuesday.

Rico Waas said the city administration continues to strive to provide maximum public services, including offering the free homecoming programme ahead of the major religious celebration.

For Eid 2026, Rico said the Medan City Administration provided 4,000 quotas for residents wishing to undertake homecoming journeys between districts and cities within North Sumatra Province.

“On the first day of departure, 65 buses were dispatched carrying 2,100 passengers. Today, we are again dispatching 1,900 travellers using 58 buses,” he said.

The 12 routes include Medan-Pakpak Bharat, Medan-Sidikalang, Medan-Tarutung, Medan-Sibolga, Medan-Rantau Prapat, Medan-Kota Pinang, Medan-Sibuhuan, Medan-Gunung Tua, Medan-Sipirok, Medan-Padang Sidempuan, Medan-Panyabungan, and Medan-Natal.

“We urge the bus drivers to always exercise caution. The distances are considerable and the journeys are quite lengthy. The drivers’ health conditions must be thoroughly ensured to be in good condition,” he said.

He expressed hope that the free homecoming programme would facilitate smooth travel during the 2026 Eid season so that residents celebrating the major religious festival would feel safe and comfortable.
