Mayor Dismisses 'Gotham City' Nickname for West Jakarta, Says Crime is Under Control
JAKARTA – West Jakarta Mayor Iin Mutmainnah has dismissed claims that her district is rife with nighttime crime, earning it the nickname ‘Gotham City’. She asserted that crime levels remain relatively low compared to other areas of the capital, citing continued public activity in open spaces after dark as evidence.
She highlighted frequent evening sports activities at both government and private facilities, such as Marudja Sport Park, as proof of the area’s safety and comfort for nighttime activities. However, she urged residents to take preventive measures, such as staying vigilant and avoiding unnecessary outings alone, especially for women.
Regarding the ‘Gotham City’ moniker, Iin clarified it stems from Batman’s fictional universe, stressing the importance of community efforts through the Community Early Warning Forum (FKDM) to map and monitor high-risk crime areas. The FKDM, representing local districts, is best positioned to assess on-ground conditions and implement targeted safety measures.
