Maybank Marathon Strengthens Commitment Towards 2030 Carbon Neutral Target
Maybank Marathon is strengthening its sustainability commitment by targeting the event to become a carbon-neutral marathon by 2030 through various emission reduction measures and environmental impact management.
“Maybank Marathon is not just an event for runners to achieve their personal best; we want to make every step more meaningful by leaving a positive impact on the environment and society,” said Maria Trifanny Fransiska, Head of Sustainability at Maybank Indonesia, during a media gathering in Jakarta on Tuesday.
The initial step towards this target involves measuring the carbon footprint of the 2025 Maybank Marathon using a carbon calculator to obtain baseline emission data generated during the event.
“Sustainability is not merely an end goal, but a long journey that must be undertaken together. Therefore, we are starting by calculating the emission baseline so that future carbon reduction steps can be carried out in a measurable and responsible manner,” Maria stated.
The carbon footprint calculation is conducted with climate tech partner Jejakin, referencing international event emission calculation frameworks. Components measured include participant travel to Bali, local transportation, accommodation, energy use during the event, and waste management.
Jejakin ESG Lead Dwiputra Ahmad Ramdani explained that the majority of emissions stem from participant activities, particularly the accommodation and transportation sectors. “From the calculation results, the largest contribution comes from participant accommodation because many runners stay in Bali for several days. Additionally, air travel to Bali is also a significant emission contributor,” Dwiputra said.
To curb these emissions, Maybank Marathon has prepared several initiatives, including promoting the use of electric vehicles, optimising shuttle services for participants, and enhancing collaboration with the hospitality sector that applies environmentally friendly principles.
Beyond emission reduction, the organiser is also implementing various environmental programmes, including mangrove planting as part of carbon absorption efforts. Maybank Marathon’s sustainability commitment also encompasses social aspects through sustainability education programmes, a Sustainability Pavilion, Run for Charity, and the empowerment of local Balinese communities. Going forward, Maybank Indonesia is committed to strengthening various sustainability initiatives based on the established roadmap.
These efforts are expected to support the achievement of Bali’s Net Zero Emission 2045 target, whilst reinforcing Maybank Marathon’s position as a world-class running event that prioritises sustainability.
