Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia — PT Bank Maybank Indonesia Tbk (BNII) has discussed its plans to upgrade to the Category IV core capital bank (KBMI IV) group. Maybank Indonesia’s President Director, Steffano Ridwan, stated that the mid-tier listed bank is always striving to grow larger. “We are always trying to grow, and of course, if there is an opportunity to move up to Book IV bank, why not? But everything must be done with thorough planning. Because moving to Book 4, if we don’t know what we want to do, it will be pointless,” Steffano explained at the Function Hall, Gedung Sentral Senayan 3, on Monday (30/3/2026). He noted that the opportunity to upgrade to a “big bank” is always open for the Malaysian Maybank Group-owned bank. However, Steffano reiterated the need for solid growth planning. “But it requires good planning. That’s what we are doing now,” he said. Regarding the target timeline for realisation, he said it is not this year. However, Steffano indicated that Maybank Indonesia has the potential to advance in rank within the next two to three years. “The target is definitely not now. Because the situation is also challenging and so on. Possibly within the next 2-3 years, that possibility is not closed,” Steffano stated. As is known, the Financial Services Authority (OJK) is encouraging an increase in the number of KBMI IV banks. OJK’s Executive Head of Banking Supervision, Dian Ediana Rae, estimated that two to three banks have the potential to upgrade to big bank status. “This year, if I estimate, maybe around two or three [banks upgrading to KBMI IV],” Dian said when met at the Supreme Court on Wednesday (25/3/2026). According to her, several banks have already applied for the upgrade. Dian mentioned that their capital positions are already approaching the threshold to meet the requirements for the category of banks with core capital above Rp70 trillion. Recorded as of December 2025, Maybank Indonesia’s core capital reached Rp30.88 trillion. Currently, there are only four KBMI IV banks in Indonesia, namely three state-owned bank conglomerates: PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia (Persero) Tbk. (BBRI), PT Bank Mandiri (Persero) Tbk. (BMRI), and PT Bank Negara Indonesia (Persero) Tbk. (BBNI), plus one private bank, PT Bank Central Asia Tbk. (BBCA).
