May new vehicle sales down
JAKARTA: New vehicle sales in Indonesia fell 3.4 percent in
May from the previous month to 28,365 units, the car assemblers
association, Gaikindo, said Thursday.
PT Astra International - which has a joint venture with Toyota
Motor Corp. to assemble and distribute the Japanese company's
vehicles in Indonesia - saw a 3.7 percent drop in sales to 12,278
units, Gaikindo said.
New commercial cars accounted for 26,296 units of total sales,
down 1.2 percent.
New passenger car sales - a barometer of consumer confidence -
were down 19.2 percent at 2,069 units.
So far this year, Indonesian consumers have bought 131,778 new
vehicles, the association said. -- Dow Jones
