May Day 2026 Monas Area Predicted to be Crowded, Check Alternative Routes
JAKARTA - Vehicle traffic in the National Monument area and its surroundings is expected to experience congestion during the Labour Day commemoration on Friday (1/5/2026). However, the police emphasise that traffic engineering will not be immediately enforced from the start, but rather adjusted to the conditions on the ground.
Citing Kompas.com, the Head of Public Relations of Metro Jaya Police, Senior Commissioner Pol Budi Hermanto, explained that traffic diversions will only be carried out if the situation becomes truly congested.
The public is advised to avoid the central action area if they have no urgent business.
This is because the number of workers estimated to attend around Monas is about 220,000 people.
In addition, other actions will also take place in the DPR/MPR RI Building area with an estimated crowd of 5,000 to 7,000 people.
The Labour Day momentum, which coincides with a national holiday, also has the potential to increase residents’ mobility. Therefore, the authorities remind that activities outside the home can be minimised to avoid unnecessary congestion.
To support security, a total of 24,980 combined personnel are on standby, including 1,793 personnel from the Traffic Directorate focused on traffic management.
Dense creeping congestion risks increasing engine temperature and more wasteful fuel consumption, especially on automatic cars and automatic motorcycles.
“If the car keeps creeping in traffic jams, the engine heat rises faster and fuel consumption also increases,” said Fendy, Director of PT Autokooling Jaya Nusantara (AJN), the official distributor of Koyorad radiators in Indonesia, to Kompas.com on Thursday (30/4/2026).
From the south (Blok M/Senayan): avoid Sudirman-Thamrin, can go via HR Rasuna Said Road to Kuningan then through to the eastern part of Menteng.
From the east (Bekasi/Jatinegara): use the DI Panjaitan Road - Otista - Kampung Melayu route, then continue to Tebet or Casablanca.
From the north (Ancol/Kemayoran): choose the Gunung Sahari - Mangga Dua route - or directly to Sunter to avoid the city centre.
By choosing alternative routes and avoiding mass concentration points, motorists can reduce the risk of being stuck in long traffic jams during the Labour Day commemoration.
