May Day 2026, Megawati: Workers Are Not Merely Factors of Economic Production
JAKARTA - The General Chair of PDI Perjuangan, Megawati Soekarnoputri, delivered a message during the commemoration of Labour Day (May Day) 2026. Megawati called for workers not to be seen merely as factors of production in economic figures. “PDI Perjuangan asserts that workers are not merely factors of production in economic numbers, but the pillars of struggle and, together with farmers and fishermen, the orientation of national self-reliance,” Megawati stated via a video broadcast at the Labour Day (May Day) 2026 commemoration themed “Banteng Pro Pekerja: Buruh Berdaulat, Indonesia Berdikari” at GOR Otista, Jakarta, on Sunday (3/5/2026). According to her, the workers’ struggle is a manifestation of resistance against various shackles of colonialism resulting from the workings of capitalism and imperialism. “In the cultural perspective, the struggle for justice in the economic field becomes an essential essence of socio-democracy in Pancasila. This economic justice is not only fought for by workers but also becomes the ideological goal of Indonesian independence,” she said. Megawati assessed that such efforts must be carried out through harmonious-constructive cooperation between the government, entrepreneurs, and workers, as well as related institutions including the Research and Innovation Agency to educational institutions. “We continue to struggle for workers’ welfare as a prerequisite for social justice for all Indonesian people,” she emphasised.
