The commemoration of International Labour Day this year has drawn the attention of Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) and Coordinator for Economy and Finance Affairs, Sari Yuliati. She views May Day not only as an appreciation for workers’ contributions to national development but also as a reminder of the labour issues that still persist.

“Workers are the main drivers of the economic wheel. However, we cannot turn a blind eye to the fact that many are still facing pressures, both in terms of wages that are insufficient for a decent living and the increasing risk of layoffs,” she stated in a press release in Jakarta on Friday, 1 May 2026.

Sari stressed the importance of policies that favour workers’ welfare, particularly through fair wage guarantees and adequate employment protection. She also highlighted the need for stricter supervision of labour practices that harm workers, including uncertain work systems and minimal social security.

In addition, the wave of layoffs in several sectors has become a concern for DPR RI. The government is encouraged to take anticipatory steps to maintain job stability while ensuring protection for affected workers.

“Do not let workers become the most disadvantaged party in challenging economic situations. The state must be present to ensure protection and solutions,” emphasised the legislator from the Nusa Tenggara Barat II electoral district.

She also invited the government, business world, and labour unions to strengthen dialogue to find joint solutions for creating a fairer and more sustainable labour ecosystem.

Happy Labour Day 1 May 2026. May the hard work of workers today truly bear fruit in a more decent, safe, and prosperous life,” concluded the Golkar Party faction politician.
