May Day 2026 at Monas: 400,000 Workers and Ride-Hailing Drivers to Stage Protest
The International Labour Day or May Day 2026 will be held at the National Monument (Monas) in Central Jakarta this week. It is estimated that 400,000 people will take to the streets in protest.
President of the All-Indonesian Confederation of Workers’ Unions (KSPSI) Andi Gani Nena Wea stated that the 400,000-strong crowd will consist of workers and online motorcycle taxi (ojol) drivers.
“My calculation is that with the joining of various elements, including online motorcycle taxi friends who will listen to the government’s announcement, it will reach 400,000 people. So from workers, more than 200,000, and from other elements including ojol, another 200,000,” said Andi Gani during a press conference by the May Day 2026 Committee in the Menteng area, Central Jakarta, on Monday (27/4/2026).
Andi Gani mentioned that the May Day commemoration will be attended directly by President Prabowo Subianto. Prabowo is scheduled to deliver a state speech and strategic policies for workers in 2026.
“Mr President will deliver his state address and he will outline what he will do in 2026,” he said.
On that occasion, Andi Gani noted that the Prabowo administration has fulfilled several workers’ demands. Among them are the designation of Marsinah as a National Hero and the enactment of the Domestic Workers Protection Law (UU PPRT).
“We express our thanks to President Prabowo Subianto and the government for keeping the May Day promises. First, elevating our sister, Mrs Marsinah, to National Hero status, which he has fulfilled. Second, the UU PPRT, which he has also fulfilled,” he stated.
In addition, Andi Gani mentioned that there will be new regulations regarding outsourcing to be announced before 1 May. These rules will limit outsourcing to only five types of work and set time limits for appointing permanent employees.
“This May Day, workers will be very happy because outsourcing, which has been rampant, will be tightened and the types of jobs restricted,” he said.
Not only workers, but ojol drivers will also receive gifts from Prabowo. However, Andi Gani did not provide details on the gifts to be given by Prabowo.
The committee has also coordinated with the police regarding bus routes, parking areas, and security. The May Day 2026 event is planned to start from 08:00 to 11:00 WIB.
“Friday prayers will be held at Monas Field. The committee has prepared everything for ablution and other needs. There will be a national figure serving as the sermon giver and imam,” said Andi Gani.
