May 2026 Inflation at 0.28 Per Cent, Driven by Red Chillies and Airfares
The Indonesian Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded a monthly inflation rate of 0.28 per cent in May 2026. This figure represents an increase compared to the April 2026 inflation rate of 0.13 per cent.
Pudji Ismartini, the Deputy for Methodology and Statistical Information at BPS, stated that the May 2026 inflation caused the Consumer Price Index (CPI) to rise from 111.09 in April to 111.40 in May 2026. βThe food, beverage, and tobacco group was the main contributor to monthly inflation in May 2026, with an inflationary contribution of 0.12 per cent and an inflation rate of 0.39 per cent,β Pudji said during a BPS press conference on Tuesday (2/6/2026).
Pudji explained that red chillies were the commodity providing the largest inflationary contribution at 0.08 per cent. Additionally, cooking oil and shallots each contributed 0.04 per cent to inflation, while tomatoes and rice contributed 0.03 per cent and 0.02 per cent, respectively.
According to BPS, petrol and airfares were the dominant commodities driving price increases within the transportation group, each contributing 0.02 per cent to inflation.
Conversely, several commodities helped restrain the pace of inflation, including broiler chicken, chicken eggs, and garlic. The core inflation component was the largest contributor, with a contribution of 0.14 per cent and an inflation rate of 0.22 per cent. Pudji noted that commodities driving core inflation included cooking oil, mobile phones, laptops or notebooks, engine lubricants, prepared meals, and vehicle maintenance and service costs.
Meanwhile, government-regulated price components recorded an inflation rate of 0.52 per cent, with a contribution of 0.10 per cent.
