TOBA, KOMPAS.com - The motorcycle market in North Sumatra, Aceh, and Riau is showing positive trends in the first quarter of 2026. Large scooters or the premium class remain the backbone of sales in the region.

General Manager of PT Alfa Scorpii, Yamaha’s main dealer for Aceh, North Sumatra, Riau, and Riau Islands, Joni Lie, stated that market conditions this year are recorded as better compared to previous periods.

“The first quarter this year is a bit better, compared to before. As for demand, hopefully it remains good,” Joni said on the sidelines of the MAXI Tour Boemi Nusantara in Toba on Saturday (18/4/2026).

This category provides a very significant contribution to Yamaha’s total sales in the region.

“The first one is definitely AT Premium (MAXI). AT Premium contributes around 50 to 60 percent,” Joni said.

Specifically for the NMAX series model, which is the backbone in the MAXI class, Joni revealed a split in consumer interest between the latest variant, NMAX Neo, and NMAX Turbo.

“So far up to today, it’s the NMAX series. The composition is about 60-40. 60 percent Neo, 40 percent Turbo,” he said.

Regarding the improving demand conditions in the first quarter of 2026, Joni mentioned that this is inseparable from the plantation sector, especially palm oil.

Joni confirmed that the purchasing power of communities in North Sumatra, Riau and Riau Islands, and parts of Aceh is greatly influenced by fluctuations in the price of that commodity.

“The current conditions are good, right? So automatically, one of the demand factors can be better than last year,” he said.

The geographical conditions dominated by plantations also keep the trail bike segment in demand. Amid the onslaught of scooters, the sport bike segment remains stable at 10 percent.

However, what is quite surprising is the demand for underbone or moped motorcycles, especially the Yamaha MX King.

“The moped is the MX King, because the current enthusiasts are in sport, especially racing; MX King is doing well now,” Joni said.
