Matsushita's new plant

JAKARTA (JP): PT Matsushita Semiconductor Indonesia (MEI), jointly owned by the Japanese firms Matsushita Electronic Corp and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co, has officially opened its US$60 million semiconductor plant in Karawang, West Java.

MEI vice president Masayuki Matsushita said yesterday the new plant has a production capacity of 700,000 microcontrollers and 1.3 million ICS per month.

The plant was officially opened by Director General for Various Industries Doddy Soepardi.

Matsushita said the Matsushita group would use the Karawang plant as its main production base for the Asian market.

Aside from MEI, semiconductors are also produced in Indonesia by PT Astra Microtronics Technology, PT Omedata Electronics Indonesia and PT NEC Humpuss Semiconductor Indonesia, Antara reported. (jsk)
