Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - A mathematics lecturer has become a billionaire by successfully applying his knowledge to the world of investment. This individual is James “Jim” Simons, known as one of the most successful investors after founding a hedge fund with an average annual return of around 60%.

On May 10, 2024, Simons passed away in New York City. The founder of Renaissance Technologies died at the age of 86.

Renaissance Technologies is a quantitative investment management company that uses mathematics and statistics as its primary methods for making investment decisions. Its most famous fund is called Medallion Fund.

Between 1988 and 2018, Renaissance’s flagship Medallion Fund generated over US$100 billion in profits and an average annual return of 66% before the company’s substantial asset management fees. The annual profit was 39% after these fees, a record that surpassed the performance of Warren Buffett, George Soros, Peter Lynch, and other investors during that period. However, Medallion has not been accessible to the general public for many years and only manages funds from Simons and his colleagues.

From Mathematician to Billionaire

Compared to other mathematicians, Jim Simons is better known as a hedge fund manager because he spent more time in the world of investment.

Many people think that simply working as a lecturer would not lead to great wealth, let alone becoming a trillionaire. This is reinforced by testimonials and discussions about lecturer salaries, which have recently been a hot topic. However, there is an individual who has become incredibly wealthy despite only working as a teacher.

This is the story of James Harris Simons, also known as Jim Simons, which can serve as a lesson in how a lecturer can accumulate a fortune of US$30.7 billion or Rp482 trillion.

It should be noted that Jim Simons is an American mathematician. For Simons, mathematics has always been a part of his life. He has always enjoyed this subject, which many people find difficult. His love for mathematics led him to successfully complete his PhD from the University of Berkeley in 1961 at the age of 23.

His passion for mathematics continued into his career. He became a lecturer at Harvard University and also worked as a mathematical codebreaker for the US Department of Defense. However, there was one issue that bothered him throughout his life: money.

In his autobiography, The Man Who Solved The Market: How Jim Simons Launched The Quant Revolution (2019), Simons recounts that he needed more money to live comfortably and repeatedly sought ways to generate income. As a result, he founded a company called iStar, using his mathematical skills as its foundation.

Through iStar, Simons aimed to make money by researching and mathematically analyzing stock market trading. This approach proved successful in making him wealthy and opened up new business opportunities in the investment sector.

In 1982, he founded an investment firm called Renaissance Technologies. Here, Simons gathered many mathematicians. They were all given similar tasks: to create trading models, analyze information, and make predictions about stock market dynamics.

According to the Wall Street Journal, this approach was what distinguished Simons’s investment company from its competitors. As a scientist, Simons turned his company into a laboratory. Everyone could share ideas and collaborate to achieve optimal results.

In the end, these efforts proved successful in generating profits for the company. Since then, Simons’s name has become more well-known, especially after Renaissance Technologies demonstrated its ability to generate substantial profits for investors. From 1988 to 2018, the company achieved an annual profit of 39%.

As the owner of the company, Simons automatically became wealthy. Forbes reported that he has a fortune of US$30.7 billion or Rp482 trillion. With this wealth, he ranks as the 51st richest person in the world.

And all these efforts were carried out simultaneously with his duties as a lecturer at many universities. Throughout his life, he taught and also ran a business. To this day, his company still exists and is staffed by many mathematicians, physicists, and computer scientists, all of whom work in the capital markets sector.

Now, Jim Simons has retired. In his remaining years, he is actively involved in philanthropic activities in the United States, donating large sums of money for various causes.
