The Ministry of Public Works is building the Kebon Talo Integrated Waste Processing Facility (TPST) in Mataram City, West Nusa Tenggara, with a processing capacity of up to 60 tonnes of waste per day. The facility is being constructed to strengthen the urban waste management system whilst supporting improvements in environmental quality and the tourism sector. Public Works Minister Dody Hanggodo stated that the Kebon Talo TPST is being built on a 1.48-hectare plot and will serve the Ampenan and Sekarbela sub-districts. “The construction of the Kebon Talo TPST is part of the government’s steps to address the waste management challenges in Mataram City, which produces around 425 tonnes of waste per day,” Dody said in a written statement in Jakarta on Monday (10/8/2026). Dody noted that the need for waste infrastructure has become increasingly urgent following the closure of the Kebon Kongok Regional Landfill, which has limited waste management capacity. He said the government, under the direction of President Prabowo Subianto, is continuing to accelerate the handling of waste issues by strengthening waste management infrastructure and utilising technology capable of turning waste into a valuable resource. “In the future, mountains of waste will be converted into electricity. But more importantly, we must first change our culture. Stop dumping waste into rivers and the sea. Because when we dispose of it carelessly, nature will punish us in return, for example flooding from rivers or tidal inundation from the sea,” Dody remarked. He explained that the Kebon Talo TPST employs an integrated waste management concept. Incoming waste is not merely collected but also sorted and processed to reduce the volume ending up in final disposal sites. Dody said the facility is equipped with automatic sorting technology that separates organic, inorganic, metal, and residual waste. The TPST also utilises Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) technology to produce alternative fuel whilst increasing recycling rates. Dody detailed that the main building of the TPST is a processing hangar covering 2,592 square metres, supported by an operational office, weighbridge operator post, panel room and powerhouse, and other supporting infrastructure. He said the processing system operates through two lines—an organic line and an RDF/inorganic line—making the waste processing more efficient, environmentally friendly, and economically valuable. “Construction work on the Kebon Talo TPST began on 12 June 2026 and is targeted for completion on 31 December 2026, with a projected service life of 20 years,” Dody added. He said that building the Kebon Talo TPST is part of the Ministry of Public Works’ effort to strengthen basic infrastructure services, particularly in the waste sector. In line with the PU 608 Vision, Dody expressed hope that reliable waste infrastructure can improve the quality of the urban environment, support regional economic growth, and realise a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable city.
