Mataram (ANTARA) - The Mataram City Environmental Agency (DLH), West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Province, distributed hundreds of reusable bags or eco-bags free of charge to the public to reduce waste from single-use plastic bags.

The activity was carried out on car-free day on Udayana Street, Mataram City, with the tagline “Seize Plastic Bags” in Mataram, Sunday.

“The number of reusable or environmentally friendly bags that we distributed today is 300,” said Head of the Mataram City DLH Nizar Denny Cahyadi through the agency’s Secretary Irwansyah during the activity.

With the tagline “Seize Plastic Bags”, he said, every resident who shops at the car-free day and uses plastic bags has their bags taken by officers and replaced with environmentally friendly bags.

According to him, the use of environmentally friendly bags is intended to reduce environmental pollution, protect marine animals from plastic waste, support an environmentally friendly lifestyle, and realize a clean, green and sustainable Mataram.

In this regard, after distributing 300 eco-bags free of charge during the car-free day event, he said that in the future, the Mataram DLH will carry out similar activities by targeting traditional markets.

“God willing, we have prepared around 8,000 environmentally friendly bags,” he said.

The mayoral regulation has been implemented massively since September 1, 2024, with the first target being modern markets.

“Thank God, the use of environmentally friendly bags in modern markets is going well. Now, we are targeting traditional markets,” he said.

The goal is that in the future there will be no more residents who bring plastic bags to the market and the environmentally friendly bags that will be distributed free of charge can be used repeatedly by people when shopping at traditional markets.
