The Mataram City Government will require every housing developer to provide land for a public cemetery. Developers will be asked to allocate 2% of the total land area for burial grounds. Head of the Mataram Investment and One-Stop Integrated Services Office (DPMPTSP), Novian Rosmana, stated that his office is currently awaiting the ratification of the regulation related to this policy. “Once ratified, the regulation will be implemented immediately,” he said on Friday (10/7/2026). The regulation was adopted to anticipate the increasingly limited availability of burial land in Mataram. The regulation can also minimise the potential for disputes. Novian said that the obligation for developers to provide burial land is not an empty promise, but rather one of the requirements for issuing building approval permits and space utilisation permits. There are two alternatives for developers to fulfil this obligation. The first alternative is that housing developers can prepare 2% of the total housing area and then hand it over to the Mataram City Government as a public cemetery. The second alternative, if a cemetery is not feasible within the housing area, the developer is required to provide burial land on another site. “To fulfil the 2% obligation, developers can choose one of the two alternatives provided,” explained Novian.
