Mataram City Government Prepares Modern Cemetery to Avoid Spooky Impression

The Mataram City Government is preparing the construction of a 2-hectare regional public cemetery. The cemetery is designed with a modern, environmentally friendly concept, far removed from a spooky impression. Mataram Mayor Mohan Roliskana stated that the entire land acquisition process and the design of the burial space are ongoing. He is targeting the modern cemetery to be inaugurated on the anniversary of Mataram City this coming August. “The land clearing is underway. We will schedule the inauguration during the anniversary. But before that, the most important thing is that we must create the regulations first,” Mohan said during an interview on Thursday (16/7/2026). Mohan said the new regulations regarding the cemetery will soon be disseminated to the people of Mataram. This aims to ensure the new rules are understood before the public cemetery begins to be used. One of the important points in the modern public cemetery regulation is the prohibition of erecting permanent grave buildings. Mohan explained that the cemetery is designed as a green open space. “There are many strict rules that we apply there. One of them is that no permanent grave buildings are allowed. That is part of the regulation we are carefully preparing,” Mohan revealed. In addition to the main 2-hectare plot, the Mataram City Government is also preparing a cemetery location in the Pandan Salas area, Mataram. This 20-are grant land will also be managed with a similar concept. “About 20 ares. The concept is also a public cemetery, that’s what we are preparing,” he added. The Mataram City Government, he said, will regulate the funeral service mechanism in detail, including accessibility for residents who live in Mataram but still hold identity cards from other regions. “We know this city is very heterogeneous and has many newcomers. We see an important need to facilitate residents who have strived to live and decided to settle in Mataram until the end of their lives. We do not want social conflicts related to burial issues in the future. This 2-hectare plot is the answer,” he stated. The 2-hectare public cemetery will be equipped with various facilities, including extensive green areas, optimal lighting, ambulance services, and a complete public address or sound system. “In the future, we will provide a hearse and sound system equipment, so everything will be complete,” he concluded.
