Mataram City Government Prepares Modern Cemetery to Avoid Spooky Impression

The Mataram City Government is currently preparing the construction of a regional public cemetery (TPU) spanning 2 hectares. The cemetery is designed with a modern, environmentally friendly concept, far removed from any spooky connotations.

The Mayor of Mataram, Mohan Roliskana, said the entire land acquisition process through to the design of the cemetery grounds is under way. He is targeting the modern cemetery to be inaugurated at the City of Mataram anniversary in August.

“Land clearing is currently in progress. We plan to schedule the inauguration for the anniversary. But before that, the regulations are the most important thing and must be drawn up first,” Mohan said in an interview on Thursday (16 July 2026).

Mohan said the new regulations concerning the cemetery would soon be socialised among Mataram residents. This is to ensure the new rules are understood before the TPU comes into use.

One key point of the modern TPU regulations is a prohibition on building permanent grave structures. Mohan explained that the cemetery is designed as green open space (RTH).

“There are many strict rules we are applying there. One of them is that no permanent grave structures are allowed. That is part of the regulation we are preparing thoroughly,” Mohan said.

In addition to the main 2-hectare site, the Mataram City Government is also preparing a TPU location in the Pandan Salas area of Mataram. The 20-are donated plot will also be managed under a similar concept.

“Around 20 ares. The concept is also a TPU, that is roughly what we are preparing,” he added.

He said the Mataram City Government will set out in detail the mechanism for cemetery services, including accessibility for residents living in Mataram who still hold identity cards from other regions.

“We know this city is very heterogeneous with many newcomers. We see an important need to facilitate residents who have made every effort to live here and decided to settle in Mataram until the end of their lives. We do not want social conflicts related to cemetery issues in the future. This 2-hectare plot is the answer,” he said.

The 2-hectare TPU will be equipped with a number of facilities, including extensive green areas, optimal lighting, ambulance services, and a complete public address or sound system.

“Going forward, we will provide one hearse vehicle, sound system equipment, so everything will be complete,” he concluded.
