Mataram City Government Investigates Underpayment of Taxes by Four Taxpayers

The Mataram City Government (Pemkot Mataram) is tightening oversight of taxpayer compliance. A special inspection team has been deployed to investigate suspected tax underpayment by four major taxpayers (WP) in Mataram, consisting of restaurants and hotels.

Achmad Amrin, Head of the Service Division at the Mataram City Regional Finance Agency (BKD), said the inspection and data-mining process is being carried out to ensure that potential regional revenue does not leak.

“We are following up on it, we are conducting an inspection. The data extraction is going even deeper and sharper (on those four taxpayers),” Amrin said when contacted on Tuesday (21/7/2026).

Based on the initial inspection, indications of discrepancies in reported turnover were triggered by several factors, ranging from differences in the taxpayers’ internal record-keeping systems to errors in calculating tax rates.

Amrin said the four taxpayers under scrutiny comprise two restaurant businesses and two hotels with entertainment operations. The hotel cases are receiving particular attention because their business units sell alcoholic beverages (minol).

“There are several differences in systems, and some have miscalculated rates. The hotel that was flagged has entertainment operations there,” he explained.

“Of these four (taxpayers), there are restaurants and two hotels. The hotels have entertainment, and the entertainment venues have alcohol sales,” he continued.

Meanwhile, the BKD has affirmed its commitment to taking firm action on every finding in order to enforce the applicable regional regulation (perda). The inspection team has confirmed it has gone into the field and is already in possession of all the taxpayers’ related documents.

Although the audit process requires considerable time, Pemkot Mataram is optimistic that the underpayment to be billed could reach a substantial figure.

“The regional regulation must be enforced; the inspection is under way, the team is on the ground, and we already hold the data. The underpayment from the calculation errors is still being assessed — hopefully it will be in the billions, that is our expectation,” he concluded.
