Mataram City Government Drafts Regulations for Teacher Official Housing Rental, Sanctions Planned for Defiant Occupants
The Mataram City Government is currently drafting a mayoral regulation (Perwal) regarding the rental mechanism and enforcement of official teacher housing (rumdis) in Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB). This step follows the completion of an asset audit involving hundreds of official housing units in the city.
The Head of the Mataram City Education Office, Yusuf, stated that out of the 150 units surveyed, 80 units are in good and habitable condition, while the remainder show indications of being misused by certain parties.
“Our data collection is complete and is ready for reporting. The regulation will be drafted next,” Yusuf said during an interview on Thursday (17/09/2026).
According to Yusuf, through the mayoral regulation on the rental mechanism, the use of official housing will be strictly prioritised. The primary targets are teachers who do not yet own private homes, as well as educators whose schools are located far from their original residences.
“There are several teachers ready to rent; later, a regional regulation or mayoral regulation regarding the rental retribution for well-maintained teacher housing will be created. We will prioritise teachers in Mataram who do not yet have private homes, as well as those whose distance from school is significant,” Yusuf explained.
On the other hand, Yusuf emphasised that retirees still occupying official housing in Mataram are required to vacate the premises and return to their private residences.
For occupants who are unwilling to vacate the official housing despite long-term residency, the Mataram City Government will take firm action. This includes imposing accumulated rental charges or other sanctions.
“We will calculate how many years they have occupied the unit and accumulate the costs accordingly,” Yusuf stated.
It was previously reported that the operator of SDN 34 Mataram, Andi Widiyanto, confirmed that there are non-teacher individuals using official teacher housing near the SDN 34 Mataram area in Monjok, Mataram.
“There is a bank employee next door who has likely been there for about two years and is still residing there. He mentioned yesterday that he is waiting for his own house to be completed before moving,” he said.
Andi admitted he was unaware of how the bank employee was able to occupy the teacher housing in the Monjok area.
“I do not know the history of how he moved in. He suddenly occupied the place. Whether it is through a rental system or otherwise, I am unsure,” he said.
Andi noted that there are approximately 20 households occupying teacher housing in the Monjok area of Mataram. He also noted an increase in the number of building units that require further verification.
“Many occupy a single building unit, but suddenly it has become two units. We will need to verify this again,” he concluded.
