Mataram City Government Commits to Developing Coastal Area Integrated with Bintaro Fishermen's Village
The Mataram City Government, West Nusa Tenggara Province, is committed to developing the coastal area to integrate with the Kampung Nelayan Merah Putih (KNMP) Bintaro, aiming to improve community welfare. The coastal development is also intended to transform slum areas into more representative natural and culinary tourism destinations.
Mataram Regional Secretary H Lalu Alwan Basri stated that one of the strategic projects currently in focus is the construction and development of Kampung Nelayan Bintaro under an integrated fishing village concept. To support this, the city government has prepared over two hectares of land, with initial construction including simple rental flats (rusunawa) and a fish market to serve as a centre for fish trade and distribution to local markets.
Alwan explained that this project is a concrete step by the local government to intervene in coastal areas, making them not only liveable but also capable of boosting the economy of residents, the majority of whom are fishermen. The initiative aligns with the central government’s KNMP programme, which will provide various supporting facilities for fishermen. The development will include road improvements, drainage, proper sanitation facilities, and infrastructure to support fishing activities and hygienic fish processing. The Mataram City Government is optimistic that this development will transform the Bintaro area into a modern fishing village and a new tourism icon based on community empowerment in West Nusa Tenggara, without eroding local wisdom.
