The Mataram City Government is intensifying human resource empowerment through a series of skills training programmes. This year, the city administration has allocated a budget of Rp 2 billion to fund dozens of training courses, ranging from sewing and shoe repair techniques to barista skills.

Head of the Mataram Industry, Cooperatives and UKM Office, Jimmy Nelwan, stated that the Rp 2 billion budget is used to finance various types of training. The main focus is to improve skills so that participants can become self-reliant entrepreneurs.

Nelwan detailed that 50 people have been trained in sewing, while 30 participants were targeted for shoe repair training. “For shoe repair, we target both artisans and street vendors. They receive four days of training, pocket money, meals, and equipment assistance such as shoe lasts,” he said.

Despite the short training duration, Nelwan assured that participants receive sufficient basic material to start their own businesses. He added that the city government will provide post-training assistance to help market participants’ products widely, including through the National Crafts Council (Dekranasda) and partner stores.

Regarding participant recruitment, the city government uses a digital system to ensure a transparent process. Interested residents can register via a provided link, after which the city government will curate the data.
