The Mataram City Government will take firm action against students involved in activities such as arm wrestling and firecracker fights during Ramadan. These activities usually take place in the early hours until the end of the pre-dawn meal (sahur).

“Our team at the City Government will build effective communication with the Education Department, by taking measured steps to address this situation,” said Assistant I of the Mataram City Secretary, Lalu Martawang, on Wednesday (25/2/2026).

Martawang did not rule out the possibility of imposing sanctions on students found involved in these activities. He urged parents to monitor their children to maintain order during Ramadan.

“So that they remain within the framework of Ramadan observances, and not engage in deviant activities such as arm wrestling, firecracker fights, sarong fights, motorcycle racing, and so on,” he added.

Martawang revealed that several locations have the potential to become sites for arm wrestling and motorcycle racing in Mataram, including on Jalan Udayana and Jalan Adi Sucipto.

“Our hope is that this does not escalate into a legal matter. This is where the role of community leaders and parents comes in. Do not blame the authorities for taking firm action if these activities continue to occur,” he emphasised.

Martawang said he had asked the sub-district heads to optimise the integrated task force in their respective areas. According to him, the task force can carry out monitoring, identification, supervision, and enforcement.

Previously, a dozen teenagers in Mataram City were secured by police on Saturday (21/2) night. The teenagers were secured while enjoying an arm wrestling match in the Pagutan Timur area, Mataram District.

Mataram Police Chief, AKP Mulyadi, said the teenagers were secured after receiving reports from the public. According to him, residents were concerned about the arm wrestling activity.

In addition to securing the teenagers, officers also secured a number of two-wheeled vehicles at the location. “We received reports of teenagers allegedly engaging in arm wrestling. We secured at least 14 young people,” said Mulyadi.

It is known that the Mayor of Mataram, Mohan Roliskana, issued a Circular Letter (SE) Number 100.3.4.3/877/SETDA/II/2026. One of the points in the Circular Letter prohibits illegal racing and various activities that have the potential to cause disruption during the holy month of Ramadan.
