Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Telematics Society (Mastel) assesses that the implementation of PP Tunas by digital platforms will run more optimally if supported by mature technical standards. Chairman of the OTT/E-Commerce Division of Mastel, Alex Chandra, stated that the regulation represents a positive step by the government in strengthening child protection in the digital realm. However, industry players still require more detailed technical guidance to accurately translate the policy at the operational level. “So, these technical standards are truly important,” Alex said during a discussion in Central Jakarta on Monday. He explained that without more specific technical standards, each company has the potential to apply different approaches in fulfilling their child protection obligations on their platforms. This situation is seen as capable of causing confusion for PSE, parents, and children as users. “They (PSE) end up groping around to figure out what the regulator wants. As a result, because they think the regulator wants it this way, there is no uniformity in approaches from one company to another,” he said. Alex added that the application of the safety by design principle or security from the design stage is one approach that needs to be strengthened for digital platforms. However, implementing this concept requires a non-trivial system overhaul, especially for platforms that have already been operating. In addition, aspects of user age and identity verification also become a focus in implementing the policy. He assesses that the readiness of infrastructure and resources of each platform is an important factor in ensuring that the verification aspect runs effectively. Alex also views that collaboration between the government, industry, and other stakeholders needs to be continuously strengthened so that the implementation of PP Tunas can proceed well and make Indonesia’s digital ecosystem inclusive and safe. “So indeed, collaboration between industry, regulators, and society is truly important so that Indonesia’s digital ecosystem can be inclusive, safe, and globally competitive,” he stated.
