A devastating earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 struck off the coast of Sarangani Province, Mindanao Island, on Monday morning (8/6) at around 7:37 AM local time. According to local media outlet Philstar, the powerful tremor caused extensive damage across several areas of Mindanao. The earthquake toppled buildings, disrupted electricity and water supplies, and triggered landslides in several areas. It also briefly triggered a tsunami warning. Thousands of people, as reported by AFP on Tuesday (9/6/2026), remained displaced from their homes. As of Tuesday morning, the death toll reached at least 41, according to local provincial sources contacted by AFP. Deputy spokesperson for the Office of Civil Defence (OCD), Diego Mariano, said the majority of fatalities were recorded in the Soccsksargen region, including Sarangani Province, General Santos City, and South Cotabato. Deaths were also recorded in the Davao region. OCD spokesperson Junie Castillo stated most victims died from debris from buildings and structures that collapsed during the quake. Four people are still reported missing, and officers are currently searching for them. Local authorities, as reported by Anadolu Agency, reported at least 479 people were injured, with the majority, 456 injured victims, located in the Davao region. The earthquake impacted around 88,000 people across various parts of southern Mindanao, including 22,690 residents who were evacuated. Local officials said many people remain in open spaces due to continuing aftershocks and concerns about building safety. Search, rescue, and evacuation operations remain concentrated in General Santos City and Sarangani Province, among the worst-hit areas. In Sarangani Province, which was most severely affected, some areas are still only accessible by helicopter, and fears of aftershocks are slowing down relief efforts. A series of strong aftershocks shook the area about two hours after the first quake, with hundreds of smaller tremors following. Local authorities reported damage to 9 bridges and 19 local road sections. A total of 1,889 houses were damaged, including around 1,500 that were completely destroyed.
