Massive Cyberattack Rocks America, Wall Street Becomes Target
A massive cyberattack has shaken the United States financial sector. Hackers have launched a series of sophisticated cyberattacks against major Wall Street financial firms and investment management companies in recent days, targeting their information systems. The perpetrators attempted to infiltrate the digital infrastructure of leading financial institutions, targeting some of the world’s largest hedge funds and private equity firms. The hackers used phone calls to trick employees into granting access to internal systems or handing over other sensitive information. This tactic remains one of the most effective methods in cyberattacks. One of the companies targeted was Point72 Asset Management. A source said the company informed its investors on Wednesday that it had faced an attack from hackers, though it stated that no client data was stolen in the incident. The hackers also attempted to breach the information systems of other hedge funds, including Two Sigma Investments and Citadel. Two Sigma did not respond to a request for comment, while Citadel and Point72 declined to comment. Cybersecurity experts say that hacking attempts against major financial institutions are actually a routine occurrence. However, the pattern of attacks relying on social engineering via telephone remains a serious threat. This telephone tactic has been used effectively in the past by hacking groups such as Scattered Spider, a loose network of young hackers that has claimed numerous corporate victims in recent years. Meanwhile, global companies are facing a surge in cyberattacks that exploit artificial intelligence and ransomware capable of disrupting operations and stealing data. The White House itself earlier this year formed a working group that brings together AI developers and critical infrastructure operators to share threat intelligence and coordinate cyber defences.
