A demonstration held at the Yogyakarta (DIY) Regional Police Headquarters on Tuesday, 24 February 2026, turned chaotic on the evening of the protest. Reporters on the ground observed that crowds, representing residents concerned about police conduct, began their action around 18:30 WIB, shortly after the breaking of the fast during Ramadan.

Roads from the four-way Gejayan traffic light intersection towards UPN were closed at 19:00 WIB for public safety, including road users. Additionally, various graffiti marks appeared on the walls of the regional police headquarters, most notably the phrases “ALL COPS ARE BASTARD” and “MURDERER”.

Two explosions were heard at the location, allegedly firecrackers, which prompted hundreds of protesters to scatter and flee for safety. Afterwards, the situation around the police headquarters returned to normal.

The protesters voiced various demands, including reforms within the police force. They condemned alleged police violence against civilians and demanded an end to repressive practices in the handling of demonstrations.

“We pray for our friends who became victims so they may rest peacefully. We also hope the police realise that violence against the people is wrong,” said Yazi, one of the protest participants.
