The readiness of the automotive industry to meet the mass production target for electric sedans in 2028 cannot be assessed simply. Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia’s (TMMIN) Vice President Director, Bob Azam, stated that the automotive industry has a long supply chain involving many businesses from upstream to downstream. “The industry’s readiness should be asked to the President. Because the automotive industry has many supply chains. Like us now with conventional automotive, there might be 1,000 companies behind it,” said Bob in Jakarta on Tuesday (15/4/2026). He explained that unlike conventional cars with many components, electric vehicles rely more on several key parts. “So the most crucial thing is to prepare the supply chain. As we have conveyed, the key components for electric cars are batteries, lithium, axles, and motors,” he clarified. Additionally, Bob highlighted the importance of building supporting infrastructure, particularly public electric vehicle charging stations (SPKLU). He assessed that incentives should be focused on developing such infrastructure to enable optimal adoption of electric vehicles. “If incentives are to be given, they should be for charging stations. Because the issue will be charging. Especially fast charging, which is quite expensive,” he said. “The amount of power plants that also need to be built must be calculated,” Bob continued. President Prabowo Subianto conveyed that this target is part of the grand plan for developing the domestic electric vehicle industry. “This is very important and indeed our plan. I hope that in 2028 we will produce electric sedans on a large scale,” said Prabowo on Thursday (9/4/2026). Furthermore, the government also targets increasing the domestic content level (TKDN) for electric vehicles to 60% in the coming years, to strengthen the national industry and reduce import dependency.
