Mass Exodus from Google: Many Users Switch to Alternatives
Google is beginning to be abandoned as the world’s search engine giant. Several other search engines are starting to show their prowess, including AI models that are currently widely popular.
A CNBC International report noted that DuckDuckGo experienced a surge in installations of up to 40% per week. Meanwhile, Microsoft’s Bing surpassed 1 billion users last quarter.
ChatGPT, the giant AI model, also recorded an increase in internet traffic. Alongside these achievements, Google Search has experienced a decline.
The development of AI is complicating Google’s current position. Chatbots have become a choice for conducting searches, and several applications are competing fiercely with Google’s Gemini.
ChatGPT is in the top position for free apps on iOS. Claude from Anthropic is ranked eighth, just one spot behind Gemini.
On the other hand, however, many users dislike using AI. A Pew Research Center study last March revealed that half of United States citizens are concerned about the presence of AI in daily life.
DuckDuckGo itself offers a dedicated search engine without AI. The platform launched a new browser extension for users via noai.duckduckgo.com.
Another challenge is Google losing some of its talent to rival companies. For instance, Noam Shazeer, who once held the position of vice president of engineering and was one of the leaders of Gemini AI, now works for OpenAI.
Recently, John Jumper announced a move to Anthropic. He previously worked as a vice president and engineering fellow for the DeepMind business unit.
“We do not view these departures as a signal that Google is reducing its involvement in AI, but rather as additional data on the fierce competition in the industry to secure the best talent, as leading laboratories make aggressive offers,” analysts at Jefferies wrote in a report.
