The government has ensured that the mass bank account opening programme, initiated by President Prabowo Subianto, will continue to target members of the public who already hold bank accounts.

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, stated that the government is still in the process of consolidating public account data. However, existing account ownership will not automatically exclude individuals from the programme.

“It will be consolidated. These accounts are intended for various government programmes. Therefore, consolidation will take place at both BRI and BSI. We will also look into those who hold multiple accounts,” Airlangga explained at the Presidential Palace Complex, Jakarta, on Wednesday (9/9/2026).

When further asked whether citizens who already have bank accounts would still receive new accounts from PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (BRI) or PT Bank Syariah Indonesia Tbk (BSI), Airlangga responded briefly.

“(Those who have accounts) will still receive them,” he said.

This programme is part of President Prabowo Subianto’s directive to ensure that all Indonesian citizens possess a bank account. The government considers account ownership to be a vital foundation for expanding financial inclusion and simplifying the distribution of various government programmes.

Previously, Airlangga announced that President Prabowo had requested BRI and BSI to prepare accounts for the Indonesian people.

“The President requested that the Indonesian population should have current accounts. Therefore, BRI and Bank Syariah Indonesia have been asked to prepare accounts for the public,” Airlante said following a limited meeting at the Presidential Palace on Monday (7/9/2026).

In its implementation, the government will utilise population data from the Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration (Dukcapil). This data will then be matched with the payment systems managed by Bank Indonesia (BI).

“The data from Dukcapil will certainly be matched with the existing systems at Bank Indonesia, particularly for the payment system and the gateway system, specifically using QRIS,” Airlangga noted.

Through this scheme, the government hopes that the distribution of social assistance, subsidies, and various public service programmes can be conducted more efficiently, accurately, and in an integrated manner with the national digital payment system.
