President Prabowo Subianto has officiated the groundbreaking for the physical construction of the Masela Block megaproject, which had been stalled since 1998. The project is expected to produce approximately 9.5 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) per year. The groundbreaking serves as evidence that the government is ending the project’s period of stagnation and moving into the physical construction phase. The head of state also reminded stakeholders that the benefits of downstream processing should not only provide space for foreign investors but also for local economic drivers to maximise economic momentum. This directive aligns with the projected economic value Indonesia is expected to receive from the Masela Gas Block, which is estimated at 37.8 billion US dollars, or approximately Rp680 trillion.
